Trivia

  • Cauldrons cannot hold lava or milk despite both being able to be carried in buckets.
  • Potions can be brewed in 1.9 Beta Pre-Release 2 by adding a bucket of water along with various other ingredients to a cauldron which then runs them through a mathematical algorithm that can result in one of over two thousand different potions with positive or negative effects.
  • When broken, cauldrons do not drop water, but only the cauldron itself.
  • When the cauldron is being mined with water in it, the mining animation will superimpose itself over the water as well.
  • If a cauldron is outside, when it rains, the cauldron has the potential to fill with water.
  • A witch`s hut (a generated structure in Minecraft) has a cauldron in it.
  • Using a cauldron is inefficient, since one water block source in a cauldron can only fill three bottles, while a water source placed anywhere can fill infinite bottles.
  • As of 1.8 you can use Cauldrons to remove the dye on a Banner, just like leather armor.
  • In XBLA edition, if a

A cauldron can act as a power source for a redstone comparator. With a cauldron behind it (either directly, or separated by an unpowered solid block), a comparator will output a signal strength proportional to how full the cauldron is: 0 for empty, 1 for one-third full, 2 for two-thirds full, and 3 for completely full. Be that as it may, if there is a block between the cauldron and comparator, the comparator will not immediately update.

Block entity

In Pocket Edition, a cauldron has a block entity associated with it that holds additional data about the block. The block entity has the id name Cauldron.

  • Block entity data
    • Tags common to all block entities see Template:Nbt inherit/blockentity/template

    • CustomColor: This tag only exists if the cauldron stores dyed water (i.e. PotionId is -1 and the block data value is greater than 0); stores a 32-bit ARGB encoded color.

    • Items: List of items in the container.

      • : An item, including the slot tag. Unsure of what this is used for.
        • Tags common to all items see Template:Nbt inherit/item/template

    • PotionId: If the cauldron contains a potion, this tag will store the ID of that potion. If there is no potion stored, then this tag is set to -1.

    • SplashPotion: Whether or not the cauldron stores a splash potion; stores either 0 (false) or 1 (true).

    • isMovable: Whether or not the cauldron can be pushed by pistons; stores either 0 (false) or 1 (true). The default is 1 (true).

History

Official release
1.0.0 Beta 1.9-pre2 Arrran Cauldron 1.pngArrran Cauldron 2.pngArrran Cauldron 3.pngArrran Cauldron 4.png Added cauldrons. Originally intended to be used for the creation of potions, cauldrons were not assigned a block ID, hence making potions unobtainable. Cauldrons could be made to work with a mod, where the following was revealed:
  • Cauldrons could be filled with a water bucket.
  • Applying a potion ingredient to the water would cause it to change to a differently-colored lava texture, and adding any further potion ingredients to the filled cauldron would cause the liquid to change color.
  • Scooping out a potion with ingredients applied would cause the potion to have an effect related to the ingredient, e.g. a potion brewed with a magma cream would have Fire Resistance as an effect.
Beta 1.9-pre3 The system was deemed too complex and not user-friendly; hence the cauldron`s ability to brew potions was replaced with the brewing stand. Cauldrons were given a Block ID and Item ID and made craftable, but all abilities to apply potion ingredients to a cauldron filled with water were removed.

Uses

As of Beta 1.9 Pre-release 3, Cauldrons can now be crafted, and used to store water. Cauldrons can now refill Glass Bottles with the water required for brewing. Each Cauldron holds three bottles worth of water, which is equal to a single bucket. Despite being able to fill up any empty bottles with any regular source block, cauldrons have a new feature that allows them to emit a redstone signal when a redstone comparator is placed beside it. The more water that`s inside it, the stronger the signal. It is also used for returning leather armor to their original color if it is dyed, and dyeing the leather armor if it`s not already dyed. To also note, they are useful in the Nether, as cauldrons are the only items you can put water in.
