Enderman

Tom Stone Mojang avatar.png ⃢₀ₜ This mob becomes hostile if you attack it (easily avoided) or if you just gaze upon it (oh dear). Endermen do not attack unless provoked by a player attacking them or looking at their head from up to 64 blocks away. When provoked, endermen will open their mouths and shake with rage; when provoked by being stared at, they will also make a lengthy, loud, threatening sound and will run towards the player to attack. If an aggravated enderman is hit by another mob, it will cease attacking the player.

They can also step up one full block without having to jump.

Trivia

  • Notch claimed in public that the enderman is a “subtle” reference to “the Slenderman”, a similar looking monster with a similar name. Given the later development of the End, it is possible he already had the name in mind, and did not choose it because of the Reddit thread in which their name was revealed.
    • In the Halloween texture pack for the Console Edition, the enderman is re-skinned to look like the Slenderman.
  • Enderman sounds seem to be reverse audios:
    • The "idle1" sound is a reversed “here”
    • The "idle2" sound is a reversed “hiya”
    • The "idle3" sound is a down-pitched “what’s up?” or “this way!”
    • The "idle4" sound is a down-pitched reversed “forever!”
    • The "idle5" sound is a reversed “uh oh!”
  • The collective noun for a group of endermen is “a haunting of Endermen”, as stated by Dinnerbone.
  • Switching to spectator mode and taking an enderman’s camera adds the invert shader, suggesting that they see the End See the dimension. For the achievement, see Achievements#The End.. For the advancement, see Advancements#The End. A view of the central End island. The ender dragon can be seen flying around obsidian pillars, minecraft as an island of blue cobblestone (because end stone is a yellowish inversion of cobblestone) in a white sky, with white pillars, white endermen with green eyes and a white ender dragon.
  • If the ender dragon hits a group of endermen, there is a chance that they can actually try to attack it.
  • An enderman`s eyes and body are located in two different texture files.
  • If directly attacked by a player (one hit only), endermen have a chance not to open their mouths.
  • Enderman is the only mob that can naturally (without spawned by the player like an Endermite) spawn in all dimensions.
  • The enderman teleportation sound also plays when a player teleports using an ender pearl or chorus fruit, or when a chorus flower grows.

Spawning

Endermen always attempt to teleport upon taking damage, such as from water. Most ordinary melee attacks are successful, but are usually followed by an immediate teleport to a few blocks behind the attacking player. Endermen will not teleport in the daytime while on soul sand unless they are damaged. They will also not teleport if attacked on their legs or by wolves, as wolves attack at the legs. Endermen also hardly teleport when combating other mobs like iron golems.

It is possible for an enderman to teleport at death. In PC edition, the ender pearl should drop as soon as the enderman dies, but the experience orbs only appear when the enderman`s body disappears. Because of this, it`s possible to slay an enderman, pick up the pearl at the point where the enderman received the killing blow, and find the experience in the location the enderman teleported to. This can make it even harder for the player to gather loot.

Moving blocks

Endermen have a unique ability to pick up certain block types and move them around. They will pick up blocks in a 4⃗4⃗3 region horizontally centered on the enderman and vertically at the same level as the enderman itself. Endermen drop the block they are holding on death, making it possible to obtain grass blocks in Survival mode without the Silk Touch enchantment.

Endermen can only pick up the following blocks:

When carrying a block, the enderman may randomly place it, in a 2⃗2⃗2 region horizontally centered on the enderman and vertically at the same level as the enderman itself, if the target location is air with a non-air block beneath and the block is allowed to be placed at the target location.

While endermen may breach walls, bridge fences, break redstone circuitry, and even construct golems by removing or placing blocks, such actions are entirely random and not purposeful.

One can summon an enderman holding any block (including the ones not listed above) using the {carried:Block ID} NBT tag.

History

Beta
? At first, when Notch was still designing the endermen, he thought they were not “creepy” enough, coming with the idea that having a situation which the player would want to avoid could make the enderman significantly more scary. This gave Notch the idea to implement the staring feature, where aiming the crosshair at the enderman’s face would cause a suspenseful moment in which breaking eye contact would trigger an attack, as well as the enderman having the ability to teleport so that when the player has stared at the enderman, he or she would have to face a consequence for that action.
According to Burnie Burns of Rooster Teeth Productions, the endermen’s weakness to water was suggested by Burnie’s son when Notch mentioned that he needed to come up with a way to kill a group of endermen.

In the Beta 1.8 demo at PAX, endermen dropped diamonds as a placeholder for ender pearls Ender Pearl Type Raw materials Durability N/A Renewable Yes Stackable Yes (16) Internal ID PC: 14 PE: 87 Network ID PC: 65 Entity ID ender_pearl First appearances See History Data value dec: 368 hex: 170 bin: 101110000 Name minecraft .

    Appearance

Endermen are tall, black, and skinny. They have long, skinny legs, arms, and purple eyes. When hostile, they open their mouths and run toward or teleport to their target. They are about three blocks tall.

    Behavior

Endermen will wander and teleport around randomly, until a player attacks or "stares" at them. "Staring" at an Enderman is defined as aiming the cross hair over the Enderman`s face. . Once a player makes eye contact with an Enderman, it becomes hostile toward them. An Enderman will not be alerted if the player is protected by a method listed below.

A large group of hostile Endermen.

As of 1.4, the Enderman will make a sound upon being provoked. The sound sounds similar to a loud running engine and is a warning to brace for sudden attacks. Even if the sounds have stopped, it does not guarantee that the Enderman is no longer aggressive. It may have teleported far away from the player, or gotten stuck somewhere such as a nearby Cave. If you leave the world and then come back while being attacked by an Enderman, it may have calmed down or teleported away. An aggressive Enderman can be distracted from attacking the player if it is attacked by another mob, or if it is touched by sunlight. Endermen don`t like sunlight, and will usually teleport to a cave or other covered location during the daytime.

Endermen will take damage from both Water (including rain) and Fire or Lava, and will teleport away when they take most types of damage, but interestingly, they do not teleport away when coming into contact with fire or lava. If is raining, an Enderman will teleport wildly until they teleport to a location where the rain doesn`t hit them, most likely to a cave. Endermen cannot get hit by any type of projectile including arrows, snowballs, eggs, and negative splash potions. They will always teleport away immediately before getting hit. However, it is possible in the Console Version of the game to hit an Enderman with an arrow by aiming slightly above them so they don`t teleport from being looked at.

Endermen will occasionally pick up blocks at random times (even when aggressive), and then later place them somewhere else. If the Enderman is killed with a block in it`s hand it will drop it. An Enderman can pick up a block from any space directly adjacent to it (Including above its head or below its feet), and it can pick up some pretty unexpected blocks, such as Cacti. Endermen will attack Endermites (unless the Endermite was spawned from Ender Pearl teleportation) as long as there isn`t a survival mode player nearby, in which case it prioritizes the player, even if it is not provoked.

As of The Frostburn Update (for PC) and Minecraft Pocket Edition 1.0, Endermen can spawn in The Nether, making it impossible to avoid encountering Endermen.
